西の果ての街・佐世保で開催された歴史展覧会「西果てのワルツ」の関連プロジェクトとして、写真・寄稿・対談・ダイアグラムを新たに加え、アートブックとして再編集した「SaseboPORT-folio」のデザインを担当しました。
We were responsible for the design of SaseboPORT-folio — an art book edition developed as a companion project to “Waltz at the Western End,” a historical exhibition held in Sasebo, a city at the far western edge of Japan. The volume was expanded with newly commissioned photography, essays, interviews, and diagrams.
特徴｜フィールドワーク起点のデザイン
通常の書籍デザインには存在しない工程「フィールドワーク」をプロセスに組み込んだのが本プロジェクトの特徴です。美しい風景でも名物でもなく、まだ誰も視覚資源として使っていなかった「表面」を直接採集し、地場産野菜ならぬ「地場産画像」として誌面に持ち込みました。外から撮影された記録ではなく、街の皮膚から引き出されたデザインです。
A defining feature of this project is the integration of fieldwork into a process where book design typically operates without it. Rather than reaching for scenic landscapes or local landmarks, we collected surfaces directly from the streets — surfaces no one had yet treated as visual resources — and brought them into the layout as locally sourced imagery, in the same spirit as locally grown produce. This is not a record photographed from the outside. It is a design drawn from the skin of the city.

表紙デザインのプロセス
さまざまな時代の変化の波に大きく影響を受けてきた佐世保。泉福寺洞窟に刻まれたこの紋様はこの地を象徴しているようでした。日本で最初のワルツ「美しき天然」が作曲された地であることも単なる偶然とは思えません。フィールドワークで発見した紋様を画像として採集し、表紙デザインに起用しました。
Sasebo is a city that has been profoundly shaped by successive waves of historical change. The pattern carved into the Senpukuji Cave felt to us like a symbol of this land — and it seemed no mere coincidence that Sasebo is also the birthplace of Beautiful Nature, the first waltz ever composed in Japan. We collected this pattern as an image discovered through fieldwork and brought it into the cover design.
