We were responsible for the design of SaseboPORT-folio, a substantially re-edited art book based on documentation of the historical exhibition “Waltz at the Western Edge,” held in Sasebo — a city at the far western reaches of Japan — expanded with newly commissioned photography, contributions, and interviews.
A distinctive feature of this project was the incorporation of “fieldwork” into the design process — an approach rarely seen in book design. By directly collecting imagery from the surfaces of Sasebo’s streets, the aim was to create a design that conveys the living pulse of the city through what might be called locally sourced images — a play on the idea of locally grown produce.
西の果ての街・佐世保にて開催された歴史展覧会「西果てのワルツ」を記録しながら、新たに写真家・寄稿・インタビューを盛り込み、アートブックとして大幅に再編集した「SaseboPORT-folio」のデザインを担当しました。
本プロジェクトは普通は書籍デザインで行われない「フィールドワーク」をそのプロセスに盛り込んだのが特徴です。直接佐世保の街の表面を採集することで、地場産野菜ならぬ「地場産画像」を使って佐世保という街の息遣いが伝わるデザインを目指しました。
